Cut-out
Tetromino pieces to cut out
puzzlepave.com · sheet 1
The five free tetrominoes (I, O, T, L, S), spaced so you can cut along the thick lines. Glue onto thin card first if you like. Each square is ¾ inch (19 mm), the same size as the blank boards. L includes its mirror; S includes its mirror when you flip the piece.
Board
Blank board · 4 × 8
puzzlepave.com · sheet 2
Fill every square with two copies of I, O, L and S (no T). The T piece covers three squares of one chessboard colour, so a plain rectangle needs an even number of T pieces.
Board
Blank board · 5 × 8
puzzlepave.com · sheet 3
Use two of each free tetromino (I, O, T, L, S). Forty squares, many solutions — a good classroom race board.

What is on each sheet
Pieces: the five free tetrominoes (I, O, T, L, S) spaced for clean cut-outs

How to print and play
1
Choose your sheets
Tick the sheets you want: the five cut-out pieces, blank 4×8 or 5×8 boards, the little-box worksheet, the finish-the-rectangle worksheet, and the answer key.
2
Pick paper and colour
Choose A4 or US Letter, and Colour or Ink saver (white pieces with letters and bold cut lines).
3
Print or save as PDF
Press “Print / Save as PDF”. In the dialog keep the scale at 100% (Actual size); choose Save as PDF to download a file instead of printing.
4
Cut out the pieces
Glue the pieces page onto thin card and cut along the thick lines only. The squares are ¾ inch, the same as the blank boards, so the pieces fit straight onto them.
5
Solve the worksheets
Fill the little boxes and finish the part-solved rectangles. Each puzzle has exactly one answer, which is on the answer-key page.
Ideas for the classroom
Warm-up: sort the five cut-outs by symmetry (which look the same when flipped?)
Area check: every piece has area 4 — how many pieces do you need for a 5 × 8 board?
Colouring argument: colour a board like a chessboard and ask why a single T cannot fill a rectangle
Pairs race: one 5 × 8 board per pair with two full sets; first pair to fill it explains their strategy
Extension: play the free online tetromino packing puzzle, then try printable pentominoes for five-square pieces
Tetrominoes, polyominoes and packing
A tetromino is a polyomino of order 4: four equal squares joined edge to edge. Teachers and puzzle fans look for printable tetrominoes when they want cut-outs for a lesson, a quiet table activity or a take-home worksheet. This page is built for that intent — Print / Save as PDF, A4 or Letter, no account — rather than an on-screen falling-block race.
The five free shapes are enough for rich packing questions. One of each covers twenty squares, yet a plain 4 × 5 rectangle is impossible because of the T colouring argument above. Give pupils two of each piece and a 5 × 8 board (forty squares) and the problem opens up. Skip the T and use two each of I, O, L and S on a 4 × 8 board for a slightly easier set. Our worksheets go further: every little box and every finish-the-rectangle puzzle was filtered so the solver finds exactly one answer.
Yes. Press “Print / Save as PDF” and pick “Save as PDF” (or “Microsoft Print to PDF”) as the printer. The page is laid out for A4 and US Letter, one sheet per page.
What size are the printed tetrominoes?
Each square is ¾ inch (19 mm) when printed at 100% scale. Blank boards use the same square size so cut-outs fit the grids.
What are the five free tetrominoes?
Shapes of four equal squares joined edge to edge. Allowing turns and flips there are five: the straight (I), square (O), T, skew (S) and L. The L piece covers its mirror image when flipped; the same for S.
Is this the falling-block video game?
No. These are calm packing shapes for cutting, boards and worksheets. Nothing falls and there is no timer. For an on-screen packing game, play our free tetromino puzzle.
Why can’t one of each piece fill a plain rectangle?
The five pieces cover 20 squares, but the T covers three squares of one chessboard colour and one of the other. A rectangle has equal dark and light squares, so a single T never fits. That is why the blank boards use two of each piece (or skip T on the 4×8).
Are the worksheets suitable for kids?
Worksheet 1 starts with a 4×2 box of two pieces (about age 6+) and builds up to a 5×4 box. Worksheet 2 suits older children and adults. Every puzzle has a single solution.
Where do the answers come from?
They were computed with the PuzzlePave tetromino exact-cover solver, and each puzzle was checked to have exactly one solution.
Can I use these in class?

Can I download free printable tetrominoes without signing up?
