The board and the 8 pieces

The board has two rows of months (Jan to Dec) and the days 1 to 31. Each day you place the 8 pieces so that only today’s month and today’s day stay uncovered. The pieces are a 2×3 rectangle plus seven pentominoes:

Calendar puzzle solutions today, and for every other date

The solver lists all solutions, not just one, so you can find one that looks different from yesterday’s. Some dates are tight: a few have only 7 solutions. Others have more than 200.

  • Use Prev / Next to browse every solution for the date
  • Tap a month or day square on the board to jump to that date
  • Press Today to come back to today’s date
  • Want a nudge instead of the answer? Look at solution 1, place just the 2×3 rectangle, and continue by yourself

Solving tips

Fill the corners and the short last row (29, 30, 31) first, because they have the fewest options. The 2×3 rectangle and the U are easiest to fit along straight edges. The same habits help with the pentomino puzzle and our free 8×8 packing puzzle.

FAQ

How do I use the calendar puzzle solver?

It opens on today’s date (your device’s local date). Pick another month and day from the menus, or tap a month square and a day square on the board. The solver lists every way to cover the board with the 8 pieces, leaving only that date’s two squares uncovered.

Does every date have a solution?

Yes. With the standard 8-piece set, all 366 dates (including Feb 29) can be solved. Our solver finds between 7 and 216 different solutions depending on the date.

Which pieces does it assume?

The common wooden calendar puzzle set: one 2×3 rectangle plus the L, N, P, U, V, Y and Z pentominoes, 41 squares in total. The board has 12 month squares and 31 day squares, so exactly two squares stay open.

Are pieces allowed to be flipped?

Yes, the solver allows rotating and flipping every piece, as you can with the physical puzzle.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The search runs in a Web Worker in your browser. Nothing leaves your device.
