How to play tangram online

  1. Study the silhouette. Each level shows a dark wooden outline made of the seven classic tans. Your tray holds two large triangles, one medium triangle, two small triangles, one square and one parallelogram—exactly the traditional set.
  2. Drag a tan onto the board. Touch or click a piece and drag it over the silhouette. With a finger, the piece floats just above your fingertip so you can see where it will land. Drop it when it sits cleanly on the outline.
  3. Turn and flip. Tap a selected piece (or press Turn) to rotate it 45°. Press Flip for the mirror image—essential for the parallelogram. On a keyboard, R turns and F flips.
  4. Cover every part of the outline. The level is solved when the seven tans cover the silhouette without gaps or overlaps. Undo steps back one move; Reset clears the board; Hint places one piece from a real solution.
  5. Save and continue. Your current level, placements and solved list stay in this browser on your device. No account is required.

The classic 7 tangram pieces

Every tangram starts from one square. Cut it into seven tans and you can rebuild that square—or thousands of other outlines. PuzzlePave keeps the traditional proportions: the two large triangles each cover a quarter of the square, the medium triangle and the square and parallelogram each cover an eighth, and the two small triangles cover a sixteenth each.

Our set always uses all 7 pieces on every level—no missing tans, no extra tiles. That matches the toy you may know from a wooden box, without borrowing any commercial brand names.

Tangram strategy tips

  • Start with the two large triangles: they eat the biggest corners of the silhouette and leave clearer pockets for the rest.
  • Park the square early when you see a right-angle pocket that matches its side; the parallelogram loves 45° edges.
  • If a shape almost fits, turn 45° once more before flipping—many near-misses are just one step off.
  • Count area mentally: every closed pocket must be fillable with the pieces you still hold (multiples of the small-triangle area).
  • Use Hint when stuck: it places one tan from a verified solution of this silhouette so you can study why that spot mattered.
  • Progress through all 14 outlines at your own pace—no timer, no lives.

Why play this free tangram in the browser

Many “tangram” apps bury the classic dissection under ads, timers or brand skins. PuzzlePave’s tangram puzzle online free keeps the quiet wooden packing feel you get from our packing puzzle hub and polyomino boards: drag, turn, flip, cover the outline.

Phone and iPad come first. When you drag, the tan lifts above your fingertip; the board scales so pieces stay thumb-friendly around a 390-pixel width. Desktop players use the same silhouette with mouse drag and keyboard shortcuts. Ads, when shown, sit below the game—never as a full-screen interstitial over the board.

Want square-grid packing after you clear a few silhouettes? Try pentomino shapes, the kids packing set, or hexagon block puzzle on a hex grid. Chinese readers can open the matching 七巧板 在线 page—same game, natural Chinese copy, with hreflang both ways.

14 silhouette levels

Warm-ups begin with the classic square, then grow into longer bridges, towers, wings and animal-like clusters. Every outline is the union of a real 7-tan placement, so a solution always exists. Your browser remembers which levels you have finished on this device.

FAQ

What is a tangram puzzle?

A tangram is a dissection puzzle from China: a square cut into seven flat pieces (tans)—five right triangles, one square and one parallelogram. You rearrange all seven to match a silhouette. This free tangram puzzle online uses the classic proportions on a wooden board.

How many pieces are in a tangram?

Always seven: two large congruent isosceles right triangles, one medium triangle, two small triangles, one square and one parallelogram. Together they form a square, and countless other figures.

Is every level solvable?

Yes. All 14 silhouettes were built from a real placement of the seven tans, then checked so pieces do not overlap and the outline matches.

Does it work on a phone or iPad?

Yes. Touch comes first: drag lifts the tan above your fingertip, and boards stay compact enough for thumbs. Desktop players get the same board with mouse drag plus R/F shortcuts.

Is my progress saved?

Yes, on this device only. Level, piece positions and which silhouettes you have finished stay in your browser’s local storage.

Is this tangram puzzle free to play online?

Yes. All levels, hints and undo are free in the browser—no download and no sign-up.

Can I flip the parallelogram?

Yes. The parallelogram (and some triangle looks) need a flip to match certain outlines. Use the Flip button or the F key after selecting a piece.
