What is a pentomino animal?
A pentomino animal is an animal-shaped outline tiled with pentominoes—the twelve shapes of five edge-joined squares named F, I, L, N, P, T, U, V, W, X, Y and Z. Teachers and puzzle books often call a set of these silhouettes a pentomino zoo or animal shapes pack: same pieces as the classic 6×10 rectangle, but the board looks like a chick, dog, fish or giraffe instead of a box.
Unlike the full 60-cell rectangle (all 12 pieces), most animal puzzles use a subset so the silhouette stays crisp. Every outline below has 15 or 20 cells, so you need exactly three or four pieces. No overlaps, no hanging off the outline, and every shaded cell must be covered. If you are new to the letter names, skim the 12 pentomino shapes first, or print a cut-out set for a tabletop zoo.
Animal silhouette challenges
Try each outline with only the listed pieces. Hints sit under the board; colour solutions are further down if you want a peek. Solution counts were computed with the same DLX exact-cover engine as our pentomino solver.
15 cells · pieces F · P · Y · 1 solution
Hint: Park the P as the chubby body, then hang the Y as the neck and feet. The F finishes the wing.
20 cells · pieces F · P · W · Y · 2 solutions
Hint: Build the four legs first (two pairs of feet), then fill the body with the W staircase and the F bump.
20 cells · pieces F · P · W · Y · 4 solutions
Hint: Think head → body → tail. The W often forms the head slope; keep the P for the thick middle.
20 cells · pieces F · L · N · U · 3 solutions
Hint: The two tall ears are usually the N and F. Seat the U as the rounded haunch, then drop the L along the base.
20 cells · pieces F · N · V · Y · 2 solutions
Hint: The two humps are short towers. Place the V and N as the hump pair, then stretch the Y down one leg.
20 cells · pieces F · L · P · Y · 1 solution
Hint: Unique solution: the shell is a wide oval. Start with the L along the rim, keep the P for the head end.
20 cells · pieces F · I · L · N · 1 solution
Hint: Unique solution: the I must be the long neck. Place it first, then the N as the shoulder, L as the legs, F as the body bump.
