Tents Puzzle

Tents puzzle online

Pitch tents beside trees on a wooden grid. Match every tree to exactly one orthogonal tent, keep tents from sharing an edge (corners may touch), and honour the row/column counts — 16 original levels with undo and hints. Free, no sign-up, made for touch.

Tap empty cells to cycle empty → tent → grass. Each tree needs exactly one orthogonal tent; tents cannot share an edge (corners may touch). Numbers show tents per row/column.

How to play tents puzzle

  1. Read the trees and numbers. Trees sit on the wooden board; numbers on each row and column say how many tents belong there. This page ships 16 hand-checked levels from 5×5 to 8×8 (91 tents across all boards).
  2. Tap to place tents or grass. Tap an empty cell to pitch a tent, tap again to mark grass (no tent), tap once more to clear. Trees stay locked.
  3. Satisfy the matching rules. Every tree must touch exactly one tent on an edge (up/down/left/right). Every tent must touch exactly one tree the same way. Tents may not share an edge with each other — diagonal corners are allowed (common online rule; FAQ notes this).
  4. Use Undo, Reset or Hint. Undo reverses the last mark. Reset clears your entries. Hint places one forced tent or grass — or a cell from the unique solution. Games that used Hint do not update your best.

Tents puzzle strategy

  • Start with 0-clue rows and columns — mark every empty cell there as grass so tents cannot sneak in.
  • A tree with only one open orthogonal neighbour must claim that cell as its tent.
  • When a row’s remaining empty cells equal the tents still needed, those cells are all tents (if adjacency allows).
  • After placing a tent, mark its other orthogonal empty neighbours as grass if they would break the one-tree / one-tent pairing or share an edge with that tent.
  • Hint always agrees with the unique solution, so following it finishes a solvable board.

Why every level is uniquely solvable

We build a full legal camp (perfect tree↔tent matching, no orthogonal tent pairs, consistent counts), keep the trees and edge numbers as the puzzle, and accept the board only while a backtracking solver still finds exactly one completion. Unit tests rerun that uniqueness check on every ship.

Hint prefers forced tents or grass from those rules; if several options remain, it reads the stored unique solution — never a second conflicting layout.

FAQ

What is a tents puzzle?

A tents puzzle (tree-and-tent logic) gives you a grid of trees plus row and column counts. You place the same number of tents so each tree pairs with exactly one orthogonally adjacent tent, tents never share an edge, and the numbers match.

Can tents touch diagonally?

Yes on this page. We follow the common online rule: tents must not share an orthogonal edge, but diagonal corners may touch. Some print books forbid diagonal contact too — we spell the online rule in the how-to and FAQ so you are not surprised.

Is every level uniquely solvable?

Yes. Each of the 16 boards was generated from a valid full camping layout, then kept only while a solver still found exactly one placement. Level 1 is a 5×5 with 3 tents.

How does Hint work?

Hint first looks for a cell that must be a tent or must be grass (forced by counts or matching). If none is obvious, it places one cell from the unique solution. On level 1 the opening hint targets row 1, column 1.

Does it work on a phone or iPad?

Yes. Cells are large tap targets, the board is capped around 44svh, and Undo / Reset / Hint sit below the grid so thumbs stay clear of the wood.

Is my progress saved?

Yes, on this device only — current level, marks, cleared levels and personal bests stay under a local key (pp-tents-v1). No account.

Is tents puzzle online free?

Yes. All levels, undo, reset and hints are free in the browser with no download and no sign-up.
