How to print and play

  1. 1

    Choose your sheets

Tick the sheets you want: the 12 cut-out pieces, blank 6×10, 5×12 or 8×8 boards, the three worksheets and the answer key.

  2. 2

    Pick paper and colour

Choose A4 or US Letter, and Colour or Ink saver (white pieces with letters and bold cut lines).

  3. 3

    Print or save as PDF

Press “Print / Save as PDF”. In the dialog keep the scale at 100% (Actual size); choose Save as PDF to download a file instead of printing.

  4. 4

    Cut out the pieces

Glue the pieces page onto thin card and cut along the thick lines only. The squares are ¾ inch, the same as the blank boards, so the pieces fit straight onto them.

  5. 5

    Solve the worksheets

Fill the little boxes and finish the part-solved rectangles. Each puzzle has exactly one answer, which is on the answer-key page.

Ideas for the classroom

  • Warm-up: ask pupils to sort the 12 cut-out pieces by symmetry (which ones look the same when flipped?)
  • Area and perimeter: every piece has area 5, but perimeters differ — which piece has the smallest perimeter?
  • Pairs race: one 6 × 10 board per pair; the first pair to fill it explains their strategy
  • Extension: try the 5 × 12 board, then the online pentomino solver to compare solutions

FAQ

Is this a PDF I can download?

Yes. Press “Print / Save as PDF” and pick “Save as PDF” (or “Microsoft Print to PDF”) as the printer. The page is laid out for A4 and US Letter, one sheet per page.

What size are the printed pentominoes?

Each square is ¾ inch (19 mm) when printed at 100% scale, so the full set of 12 pieces makes a 4½ × 7½ inch rectangle. Blank boards use the same square size.

Are the worksheets suitable for kids?

Worksheet 1 (little boxes with 3 to 6 pieces) works well from about age 6. Worksheets 2 and 3, finishing a rectangle, suit older children and adults. Every puzzle has a single solution.

Where do the answers come from?

They were computed with the PuzzlePave pentomino solver, and each puzzle was checked by the solver to have exactly one solution.

Can I use these in class?

Yes, the sheets are free to print for home and classroom use. Please link to this page rather than re-uploading the files.
