Swipe on the board or use the arrows to walk; walk into a box to push it. Tap an empty square to walk there. Arrow keys / WASD on a keyboard.

How to play

Level 1: one crate, 7 pushes at least
  1. Find the goals. Each level is a small warehouse seen from above. Wooden crates sit on the floor and green rings mark the goal squares — there is exactly one goal for every crate.
  2. Walk and push. Swipe on the board, press the arrow pad or use the arrow keys / WASD to walk one square. Walk into a crate to push it one square, as long as the square behind it is free. Tap any empty square and the worker walks there by itself.
  3. You can only push. Crates can’t be pulled, and you can’t push two crates at once. A crate pushed into a corner or flat against a wall can get stuck for good, so look before you push.
  4. Cover every goal. The level is solved when every crate is on a goal — the crates turn green. The counter shows your moves and pushes next to the minimum number of pushes our solver found.
  5. Undo freely. Undo takes back your last push (and the walking before it); Restart resets the level. A red outline warns you when a crate can no longer reach any goal.

Tips: avoid dead squares and deadlocks

Almost every lost level comes from one push that can’t be undone without the Undo button. These are the patterns to watch for:

Corner: the crate can never move again
Wall with no goal: every X is a dead square
Two crates side by side against a wall are frozen
A 2×2 block of crates can’t move at all
  • Never push a crate into a corner unless the corner is a goal. A crate needs a free square behind it to be pushed, and a corner has walls on two sides.
  • Be careful along walls. A crate pushed flat against a wall can only slide along that wall. If there is no goal on that stretch of wall, the crate is lost. Across our 20 levels, 40% of all floor squares (245 of 620) are such “dead squares”.
  • Don’t park crates next to each other on a wall, and never make a 2×2 block of crates (or crates and walls): none of them can be pushed any more.
  • Fill the deepest goals first. Goals tucked into a dead end or a corner should get their crates before the doorway in front of them is blocked.
  • Keep a route for yourself. Before pushing, check that you can still walk around to the other side of the crate later. Many levels need you to push a crate part-way, fetch another, and come back.
  • Plan backwards. Pick the last crate you will place and ask where it must come from. Our game outlines a crate in red as soon as it can no longer reach any goal — that is your cue to Undo.

All 20 levels and their minimum pushes

Each number below was calculated, not guessed. Our solver does a breadth-first search over every position (crate layout plus the area the worker can reach) and returns the fewest pushes; a second search then finds, among those shortest solutions, the one with the fewest walking moves. The levels get harder as you go: Easy levels need 7–18, Medium 18–27, Hard 27–30 and Expert 31–37 pushes.

Moves vs pushes

Every step the worker takes is a move; a step that shoves a crate is also a push. Puzzle fans usually score by pushes first and moves second, and so do we: your best result on each level is stored as pushes / moves, and a solve that matches the minimum push count is marked Perfect. Walking around costs moves, but only pushes can get a crate stuck — so it often pays to walk the long way round.

FAQ

How do you play a box pushing puzzle?

You move a worker around a warehouse and push crates onto goal squares. You can push a crate one square at a time if the square behind it is empty, but you can never pull a crate or push two at once. The level is solved when every goal has a crate on it.

What does “minimum pushes” mean?

It is the fewest crate pushes needed to solve the level, worked out by our own solver searching every reachable position. Walking steps are counted separately as moves. Across all 20 levels the minimums add up to 492 pushes; matching the minimum on a level earns a “Perfect”.

Why is a crate in a corner a problem?

A crate can only be pushed from the opposite side. In a corner two sides are walls, so there is no square to push it from in either direction — it will never move again. Unless that corner is a goal, the level can no longer be solved and you need to Undo.

Are the levels original?

Yes. All 20 levels were generated for PuzzlePave: we build a small room, place the goals, and search backwards from the finished position to find the start that needs the most pushes. Every level is then re-solved by a separate solver to confirm it is solvable and that the minimum is correct.

Does it work on a phone or iPad?

Yes. Swipe on the board to walk (keep your finger down to walk further), use the large arrow buttons under the board, or tap a square to walk there automatically. On a computer use the arrow keys or WASD, Z to undo and R to restart.

Is my progress saved?

Yes. Your current position on every level, the levels you have solved and your best result (pushes and moves) are saved in this browser. There is no sign-up and nothing is uploaded.
